What insurance can Bakersfield residents get through us?

Short answer

Car, home, condo, renters, landlord, SR-22 and small business insurance, all for California, and we can help you compare earthquake options. For most of these we can quote more than one carrier, so you see a comparison instead of one company's price.

What should Bakersfield drivers keep in mind?

Short answer

Plan for freeway miles and winter fog. Highway 99 runs straight through town, dense tule fog settles over the valley most winters, and California's 30/60/15 minimum is thin protection for a crash at freeway speed.

The rest of the road network matters too. Highway 58 now follows the Westside Parkway and the Centennial Corridor, which opened in 2024, then heads east over the Tehachapi Pass toward Mojave. Highway 178 climbs the Kern River Canyon toward Lake Isabella, and I-5 runs down the west side of the valley before it climbs the Grapevine.

Our page on car insurance in Bakersfield covers what pays after a fog pileup and why most summer heat problems aren't claims. Drivers with a DUI or license suspension can start with SR-22 insurance, and the state's rules are summarized in our guide to California's minimum car insurance.

How do Bakersfield neighborhoods change a home insurance quote?

Short answer

Mostly through the age of the house and how close it sits to wildland. Older central homes draw more questions about wiring, plumbing and roofs, newer subdivisions often have more carrier options, and foothill and canyon addresses can face tougher wildfire underwriting.

You can read the city's growth in its housing. Westchester has some of the oldest homes in town, much of the southwest was built during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, and Seven Oaks, Rosedale and Riverlakes Ranch grew from the 1990s on. Rosedale alone more than tripled between 1990 and 2020, passing 18,600 residents.

Earthquake is the other local issue: the 1952 Kern County earthquake and its August aftershock hit downtown hard, and home policies exclude quake damage. See home insurance in Bakersfield and earthquake insurance for more.

Coverage for renters, landlords and condo owners

Rentals here range from apartments near CSU Bakersfield to single-family houses across town. A renters policy covers a tenant's belongings and personal liability, and some leases require one.

If you own a rental, a homeowners policy usually stops fitting once tenants move in. We can quote landlord coverage through carriers such as Steadily and Obie. It covers the building, your liability as a landlord and often the rent you'd lose while repairs are made. Details are on our landlord insurance page.

Condo and townhome owners need an HO-6 policy for the unit's interior and their belongings. See condo insurance for what it covers.

Can we insure a small business in Kern County?

Short answer

Often, yes. Through NEXT we can quote general liability, workers' compensation, commercial auto and business owner's policies for many small businesses, and California requires workers' comp as soon as you have one employee.

Kern County is known for oil and farming, and its small businesses run from contractors and haulers to shops and service companies. Contractors can start with contractor insurance, anyone with work trucks or vans should read about commercial auto, and every employer should know the workers' compensation rules, which the state's Department of Industrial Relations (opens in a new tab) spells out.

Some operations, especially oil field services and large farm operations, need specialty insurers we may not work with. Call and we'll tell you quickly whether we can help, and say so if we can't. The overview is on our business insurance page.

Bakersfield neighborhoods and Kern County towns we serve

We write policies anywhere in the city and the rest of Kern County, including:

  • Central and east: Downtown, Westchester and East Bakersfield, the old town of Sumner.
  • Southwest: Stockdale, Laurelglen, Haggin Oaks, Silver Creek and Seven Oaks.
  • North and northwest: Oildale, Rosedale and Riverlakes Ranch.
  • Around the county: Shafter, Wasco, Delano, Arvin, Taft and Tehachapi.

We're licensed in California only, so we can insure homes and cars kept anywhere in the state but not outside it.

Is a remote agency a good fit for you?

Short answer

It is if you're comfortable handling insurance by phone and email. If you'd rather sit across a desk from someone, a local office will suit you better, and we'd rather say that up front.

What you get from us instead is choice and continuity. As an independent agency, we compare carriers rather than selling a single company's policies, and the person who quotes you this year is the person who answers next year. Our home base is the Santa Clarita Valley, and Kern County clients get the same two people and the same follow-through.

Questions we hear a lot

Insurance in Bakersfield: common questions

Short answers to what people ask us most. Anything else, call and ask Brian or Dolores.

Still have a question?

Talk to a licensed agent at the Valencia office.

(818) 909-7486

Mon to Fri, 9 AM to 4 PM

Do you have an office in Bakersfield?

No. Our one office is in Valencia, in the Santa Clarita Valley, about 80 miles south. We serve Bakersfield and the rest of Kern County entirely by phone, email and e-signature, so you reach the same two people on every call without driving anywhere. If you ever want to meet, call ahead and we'll set a time at the Valencia office.

How quickly can I get a quote?

During weekday business hours we usually respond within the hour. Car quotes tend to be the quickest. Homes and businesses take longer when a carrier needs more detail, like a roof year or payroll figures, and we'll tell you right away what's missing. After hours, expect our call the next business morning.

Who handles my claim if something happens?

The insurance company handles the claim itself, with its own adjusters, and you can report it any time using the claims number on your ID card or policy. During business hours you can also call us first. We'll help you report it, explain what your policy covers and follow up with the carrier if things stall.

Can you insure homes or cars in Tehachapi, Taft or the Kern River Valley?

We can quote them, since our license covers all of California. Homes in the mountains and canyons, including Tehachapi and the Kern River Valley, can face stricter wildfire underwriting than homes on the valley floor, so carrier options may be narrower. We'll tell you honestly which carriers will look at the address.

Are you licensed to sell insurance in California?

Yes. Iriana Insurance Services, Inc. holds California license #0D44425, and Brian Iriana holds license #0G73836. You can look up both on the California Department of Insurance website. Our license covers California only, which includes every city and county in the state.

Can you review the policy I already have?

Yes, with no charge and no obligation. Email us your current declarations pages and we'll look at your limits, deductibles and gaps, then tell you whether another carrier is worth quoting. Sometimes the honest answer is that your current policy is fine, and we'll say so.
