SR-22 Insurance in California: Get Filed and Stay Filed
An SR-22 isn't a separate kind of insurance. It's a certificate your insurance company sends the California DMV to prove you carry at least the state minimum liability, usually for three years. We look for a carrier that will write your record, have it file the SR-22, and help you keep the policy active the whole time, because a lapse can put your license back in suspension.

At a glance
- The DMV calls it the California Insurance Proof Certificate, form SR 22 (also written SR 22/SR 1P). Your insurer files it electronically; you don't file it yourself.
- You usually keep it on file for three years from the date it's first filed.
- If the policy cancels while you still need the SR-22, the insurer reports it (the cancellation filing is called an SR-26) and the DMV can suspend your license again until a new SR-22 is filed.
- No car of your own? An operator's policy, often called a non-owner SR-22, covers you when you drive cars you don't own.
- Bristol West is usually the first carrier we check for SR-22 drivers. Acceptance is always up to the carrier's underwriting.

Car insurance on a car registered to you, with the SR-22 filed on it. It covers you and, usually, other people who drive the car with your permission.
Operator's (non-owner) policy
Liability coverage for the times you drive a car you don't own. It meets the SR-22 requirement when no car is registered to you.
Liability at 30/60/15 or higher
The part the SR-22 certifies: it pays for injuries and damage you cause to others. Higher limits are available if you have a home or savings to protect.
Uninsured motorist
Optional on an SR-22 policy, and worth pricing. It pays for your injuries when the driver who hits you has no insurance.
Collision and comprehensive
Physical damage coverage for your own car. Required if the car is financed or leased; optional on an older car you own outright.

What is an SR-22 in California?
Short answer
An SR-22 is proof, sent by your insurance company to the DMV, that you carry at least California's minimum liability coverage. The policy itself is ordinary car insurance; the SR-22 is the certificate attached to it.
It has to come from an insurance company authorized to do business in California, and the policy behind it must meet the 30/60/15 minimum: $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for injuries, plus $15,000 for property damage. Our guide to California's minimum car insurance explains those limits.
The DMV will also take a $75,000 surety bond or a $75,000 cash deposit as proof. Tying up that much money isn't practical for most people, which is why the insurance certificate is the usual route.
Read your DMV notice first
Your DMV notice or court paperwork says what proof is required and for which action. Have it in front of you when you call; it tells us exactly what the policy needs to do.
Who needs an SR-22 in California?
Short answer
Drivers the DMV requires to show proof of financial responsibility to end or ease a suspension, for example after a DUI or after a collision while uninsured. Your notice will say if it applies to you.
- After a DUI. DMV handouts list proof of insurance (SR 22) as a requirement for the restricted licenses offered after a DUI, including one tied to an ignition interlock device, and again for full reinstatement. The first-offender handout says to maintain the SR 22 for 3 years.
- After an uninsured collision. If you're in a crash without insurance, the DMV can suspend your license for up to four years, whoever was at fault. You can get the license back for the last three years by filing an SR-22 and keeping it in place.
- Other financial responsibility actions. The DMV can require proof of insurance to end other suspensions, too. The notice names the requirement and the dates.
A crash with more than $1,000 in property damage, or with anyone hurt, also has to be reported to the DMV on an SR 1 within 10 days, no matter who caused it. Not filing is a separate reason for a suspension. Our guide on what to do after a car accident in California covers the rest of that checklist.
How long do you need an SR-22 in California?
Short answer
Usually three years. DMV forms say proof is normally kept on file for three years from the first date it's filed to end the action, and the DMV's DUI handouts give the same 3 years.
The uninsured-collision case works a little differently: the three years are the last three years of a suspension that can run as long as four. Whatever your situation, the dates on your DMV notice are the ones that count.
Near the end, confirm before you cancel
Don't drop the policy the week you think the requirement ends. Confirm the date with the DMV or on your driver record, then tell us, and we'll line up the next policy so there's no gap.
What happens if your SR-22 insurance lapses?
Short answer
The insurer tells the DMV that the policy ended, with a cancellation filing called an SR-26, and the DMV can suspend your license again until a new SR-22 is on file. A single missed payment can start that chain.
Once a California car policy is in force, the insurer can only cancel it for a few reasons: nonpayment, fraud or material misrepresentation, or a substantial increase in the risk. For nonpayment, it must give you 10 days' written notice after the due date. Treat those 10 days as your window, and call us the day a notice arrives.
- Set up automatic payments and keep the card on file current.
- Changing carriers? The new policy and its new SR-22 must start before the old policy ends.
- Call us before you sell or replace the only car on an owner's policy, so the coverage behind the SR-22 doesn't end with it.
- Keep your mailing address current with the insurer and the DMV, so notices reach you.

Can you get an SR-22 if you don't own a car?
Short answer
Yes. An operator's policy, often called a non-owner SR-22 policy, covers your liability when you drive vehicles you don't own, and the insurer can file the SR-22 on it.
California's Vehicle Code describes an operator's policy as covering damages from your use of any motor vehicle not owned by you. It fits people who need their license back but have no car registered to them, such as someone who plans to buy a car later or occasionally borrows one.
It isn't coverage for a car you own. If you buy one, you'll need an owner's policy with a new SR-22 filed on it, and we can start that policy before the operator's policy ends.
Which carriers write SR-22 policies?
Short answer
Bristol West is usually our first call. It writes car insurance for drivers with tickets, accidents or a DUI, and it can add an SR-22 filing to the policy.
If your record allows, we also check the other carriers we work with. Once the SR-22 years are behind you, we'll shop your California car insurance with standard carriers such as Mercury and Travelers again. Every carrier decides for itself whether to accept a driver.
If no carrier will write you, California has a backstop. The California Automobile Assigned Risk Plan (CAARP) assigns high-risk drivers to an insurer for liability coverage, and we'll tell you plainly if that's the likely path.
How much does SR-22 insurance cost in California?
Short answer
It depends far more on the violation behind the SR-22 than on the filing. The certificate is rarely the expensive part; the DUI or accident on your record is.
Your driving record is the first rating factor under California law, so a recent DUI or at-fault accident weighs heavily. A DUI conviction in the past 10 years also rules out the Good Driver Discount, which is worth at least 20% to drivers who qualify. Ways to keep the price manageable:
- Consider liability-only on an older car you could afford to replace.
- Raise collision and comprehensive deductibles on a newer one.
- Ask whether paying in full avoids installment fees.
- Keep the policy active and claim-free; a clean three years puts you in a better spot with standard carriers.

Do I file the SR-22 myself?
No. Only an insurance company authorized in California can issue the certificate, and it sends it to the DMV electronically. Your part is buying a policy that carries the SR-22, signing the application and making the first payment. Anything else the DMV asks for, such as fees or proof of a DUI program, is separate from the insurance.
Does an SR-22 follow me if I switch insurance companies?
Not automatically. Each SR-22 is tied to one insurer's policy, so a new carrier has to file a new one. The safe order is: buy the new policy, confirm the new carrier has filed the SR-22, then cancel the old policy. If the old policy ends first, its insurer reports the cancellation and the DMV can suspend your license even though you meant to stay covered.
Can I get a restricted license with an SR-22 after a DUI?
The SR-22 is one of the requirements. DMV handouts list proof of insurance (SR 22) for the restricted license options after a DUI, including one tied to an ignition interlock device and one limited to driving to work and your DUI program. The DMV also requires program enrollment and fees. We handle the insurance; the DMV or your attorney can confirm what applies to your case.
Will an SR-22 raise my car insurance rates?
The filing itself isn't what raises the price; the violation behind it is. California rates lean hardest on your driving record, and a DUI conviction in the past 10 years also means no Good Driver Discount. As violations age and drop off the record carriers use for rating, prices tend to improve, which is one more reason to keep the SR-22 policy active and claim-free.
Is an SR-22 the same as an SR 1?
No. The SR 1 is the accident report you send the DMV within 10 days after a crash with more than $1,000 in property damage or any injury. The SR 22 is the insurance certificate your insurer files to prove you're covered. An uninsured crash can involve both: the SR 1 starts the DMV process, and an SR-22 is how you get your license back afterward.
I don't have prior insurance. Can I still get an SR-22?
Yes. Under Insurance Code 1861.02, the lack of prior insurance can't by itself be used against you for Good Driver eligibility, rates or insurability. Bristol West says it accepts drivers with or without prior car insurance. Your driving record still sets the price, and the DMV notice tells us what the policy has to do.
How fast can you get an SR-22 filed?
Often the same day you buy the policy, if the carrier allows it. The carrier sends the SR-22 electronically once the policy is issued and the first payment is made, and the DMV's records can take a little longer to show it. If your notice has a deadline or you have a DMV appointment, give us the date when you call so we can plan around it.
