Home and Auto Insurance Bundle, Priced Both Ways
Putting your house and both cars with one carrier often earns a multi-policy discount, and it gives one agent the whole picture. It isn't automatically the cheaper route, though. We price your household as a bundle with carriers such as Mercury and Travelers, then as separate policies, and show you both totals side by side before you decide.

At a glance
- Mercury and Travelers both offer multi-policy discounts for combining home and auto. The amount depends on each carrier's approved rates and your household.
- California law ranks your driving record, yearly mileage and years of driving experience ahead of optional auto factors such as multi-policy.
- Drivers who qualify for California's Good Driver Discount must be charged at least 20 percent less than they otherwise would be.
- A home insured through the FAIR Plan can't be bundled with your cars, because the FAIR Plan only insures property.
- We price every household both ways, bundled and split, so you can see the real difference.

The house, other structures, belongings, extra living costs and personal liability, usually on an HO-3 form.
Auto policy for every car
Liability, uninsured motorist, medical payments, collision and comprehensive for each car and driver in the household.
Condo or renters instead
Condo owners (HO-6) and renters can pair those policies with auto too, depending on the carrier.
Earthquake, next to the home
A separate policy. A CEA policy has to come from your home insurer, which can steer which home carrier fits.
Umbrella (ask us)
Extra liability above your home and auto limits. Carriers set their own rules for the limits underneath, so we check first.

Why bundle home and auto insurance?
Short answer
Mostly for the multi-policy discount many carriers give when the same company writes both, plus the convenience of one carrier, one agent and one renewal review. For a household with a house and two cars, it's the first combination worth pricing.
- A multi-policy discount. California's auto rating rules allow "multi-policies with the same, or an affiliated, company" as an optional factor, and Mercury and Travelers both advertise a multi-policy discount.
- A multi-car discount on top. Multi-vehicle households are a separate optional factor, so two cars on one auto policy can help even before the house enters the picture.
- One review a year. If both policies start on the same day, they renew together, and we can look at the whole household in one conversation.
- One call after a big loss. If a windstorm drops a tree on the garage and the car inside it, one agent works both claims with you.
None of this changes what the policies cover. A bundle is still two separate policies, each with its own limits and deductibles, that share a carrier and a discount.
When does bundling not save money?
Short answer
When the carrier that prices your cars well doesn't price your house well, or won't insure it at all. A bundle discount only matters if the bundled total beats the strongest separate combination, which is why we price both.
- The house is in a high wildfire-risk area. One carrier may decline it, or price it high enough to cancel out the bundle discount.
- A driver has tickets, an at-fault accident or needs an SR-22. The cars may price better with a carrier that focuses on those drivers, such as Bristol West, while the house stays with Mercury or Travelers. Our SR-22 insurance page explains the filing.
- The home is on the FAIR Plan. The FAIR Plan only sells property coverage, so there's no auto policy to pair it with. The California FAIR Plan guide covers that setup.
- You own a rental too. A rental house goes on its own landlord policy, which we can quote with carriers such as Steadily and Obie. See landlord insurance.

How does California law affect a bundle discount?
Short answer
On the auto side, Proposition 103 sets the order: your driving record counts most, then the miles you drive each year, then your years of driving experience, and optional factors like multi-policy come after those. A clean record carries more weight than any bundle discount.
That ranking works in favor of the household this page is written for. Drivers with a clean record can qualify for California's Good Driver Discount, which by law must be at least 20 percent below the rate they'd otherwise be charged. To qualify, you generally need to have been licensed for the past three years with no more than one violation point, no at-fault injury accident in that time and no DUI conviction in the past 10 years.
Home insurance doesn't follow that ranking. A home premium turns on the rebuild cost, the property's wildfire risk score, the roof, the age of the plumbing and electrical, and claims history, so the multi-policy credit is one line in a price that can vary a lot between carriers. Our pages on California car insurance and homeowners insurance cover each side in more depth.
What can you include in a bundle?
Short answer
The core is your home, or a condo, plus every car in the household. Some families add a personal umbrella policy for extra liability, and earthquake coverage sits next to the home policy.
- The house or condo. An HO-3 policy for a house, or an HO-6 for a condo. Our condo insurance page explains unit coverage.
- Every car and driver. Both cars, plus a teen driver if you have one. Years of driving experience is one of California's three required rating factors, so a new driver changes the math.
- Earthquake coverage. A CEA earthquake policy has to come from the same company that writes your home policy, so if you want one, it can affect which home carrier makes sense. See earthquake insurance for the options.
- A personal umbrella, if it fits. An umbrella adds liability above your home and auto limits. Carriers usually require certain limits on the policies underneath, so ask us before you plan around one.
How we price a home and auto bundle
- 1
Send both declarations pages
Your current home and auto declarations pages show the limits you have now, so every quote matches them line for line.
- 2
Bundle with Mercury
We price the house and both cars together with Mercury, our first stop for home and auto.
- 3
Bundle with Travelers
Same household, same limits, priced together with Travelers.
- 4
Price the split
We check the strongest separate combination, such as the house with one carrier and the cars with another.
- 5
Compare and e-sign
You see both totals and any coverage differences on one page, choose, and sign from your phone.
“I've been using them for about 3 years and they've always found me a better deal than anyone else can. Small family owned agency, I've always had a smooth process. I talk to Dolores and I think Brian.”
If you're switching both policies, we can usually start them on the same date so they renew together. Keep your old policies active until the new ones are in force; your old carriers will generally refund unused premium.
Who gets the most out of a home and auto bundle?
Short answer
A household that owns its home, has two or more cars and keeps clean driving records. That's the household we most like to quote, because Mercury and Travelers both write home and auto and there are several ways to put it together.
If you're buying a house, start the home quote as soon as you're in escrow. Your lender will want proof of homeowners insurance before closing, which makes it a natural time to re-price the cars as well.
We work from one office in Valencia and serve households across California by phone, email and e-signature. Santa Clarita families can read more on our Santa Clarita car insurance and Santa Clarita home insurance pages, and our Mercury Insurance agent page covers working with Mercury through us.

Carriers we can quote
We work with 30 insurance companies, so we can run your details with carriers like Mercury Insurance and Travelers, then show you the options side by side. Each carrier makes its own underwriting decision, so acceptance and final rates are up to them. We'll tell you which ones fit before we quote.
Not every carrier writes every property, vehicle or business. Final rates and eligibility are set by the insurance company.

How much can you save by bundling home and auto insurance?
It varies too much to promise a number. The multi-policy discount depends on each carrier's approved rates, and it applies to prices that already depend heavily on your home and your drivers' records. Sometimes the bundle comes out ahead, and sometimes two separate carriers cost less. We price both versions for your household so the answer is a real figure, not an estimate.
Do both policies have to be with the same company to get the discount?
Yes. A multi-policy discount applies when the same company, or an affiliated one, writes both policies; California's auto rating regulation uses that wording. Having us as your agent for both doesn't create the discount on its own, but it does mean one person compares the options and reviews both policies at renewal.
Can I bundle if my home is on the California FAIR Plan?
Not with the FAIR Plan policy itself, because the FAIR Plan only insures property. You can still insure your cars with any carrier that fits, and a difference-in-conditions (DIC) policy from another insurer can add liability, theft and water damage to the home. We recheck the standard home market at each renewal, and if a carrier will take the house, a bundle is back on the table.
Should I switch my home and auto insurance at the same time?
Only if the new pair beats what you have, coverage included. If it does, starting both on the same date keeps the renewals together. Don't cancel the old policies until the new ones are active. If you have a mortgage, we'll make sure your lender gets proof of the new home policy so the escrow account pays the right company.
Can renters bundle their car insurance too?
Often, yes. Renters can pair a renters policy with auto, and some carriers give a multi-policy discount for that combination. Renters insurance covers your belongings and personal liability, and it can help with living costs if a covered loss forces you out. Our renters insurance page explains the coverage, and we can price it with your cars in the same call.
Does adding a teen driver change whether bundling makes sense?
It can. Years of driving experience is one of the three factors California law ranks highest in auto pricing, so a newly licensed driver raises the auto premium and makes the auto side of the comparison matter more. We'll price the bundle and the split with your teen included, and check discounts such as good student credit where a carrier offers it.
Do I need to come to the Valencia office to set up a bundle?
No. Everything can happen by phone, email and e-signature, wherever you live in California. If you'd like to sit down with us, the office is at 25060 Avenue Stanford, Suite 240, in Valencia. Reach us Monday to Friday between 9 and 4 at (818) 909-7486 and expect a callback, usually within the hour.
