More about PalmdaleAt a glance
- California rates must weigh your driving record first, annual mileage second and years licensed third. Where the car is garaged counts for less (10 CCR §2632.8).
- Central Palmdale to downtown Los Angeles is about 62 miles each way, so an honest mileage estimate matters on every quote.
- The state minimum is 30/60/15, and $15,000 of property damage coverage doesn't go far if you total someone's newer car.
- Comprehensive usually pays for a windshield cracked by a rock or debris thrown by the wind, minus your deductible.
- Carriers we can quote include Mercury, Travelers and Bristol West, and we can help drivers who need an SR-22 filing.

How does the SR-14 commute affect car insurance in Palmdale?
Short answer
Mostly through mileage. California ranks annual miles driven as the second most important rating factor, after your driving record, so a daily round trip to Santa Clarita or Los Angeles shows up in the price.
From the center of town it's about 38 miles to our Valencia office and about 62 to downtown Los Angeles, most of it on the Antelope Valley Freeway. Make the downtown trip five days a week for 50 weeks and that's more than 30,000 miles a year on one car.
Estimate your mileage honestly, since carriers can check it against odometer readings, and update it when life changes. A job closer to home, a hybrid schedule or a switch to the train can all cut the miles on your policy.
Riding Metrolink?
The Antelope Valley Line runs from Lancaster and Palmdale through Santa Clarita to Union Station. If the train replaces most of your drives, tell us, so the car is rated on the miles you actually put on it.
What makes driving around Palmdale and Lancaster different?
Short answer
Long, straight roads on a grid, and traffic around Air Force Plant 42 that the Air Force itself has called a safety problem. The valley's lettered avenues sit a mile apart, and blocks that long invite speed.
The grid starts with Avenue A at the Kern County line, and each lettered avenue is one mile farther south, with Avenue S near the south end of the city. Numbered streets climb by ten each mile east and west of Division Street. On straight mile-long blocks it's easy to let your speed creep up, and a ticket lands on the factor that weighs most in a California rate: your driving record.
Plant 42, in northeast Palmdale, is home to Lockheed Martin's Skunk Works, Northrop Grumman and Boeing. In 2021 the plant's director met with city planners from both cities, the Sheriff's Palmdale Station and the aerospace tenants about crashes and traffic delays near the plant, and Sierra Highway and Avenue M were among the trouble spots named.
That's a good reason to carry more than the minimum, plus uninsured motorist coverage, which pays your own injury bills when the at-fault driver has little or no insurance.
Does car insurance cover wind and windshield damage in the high desert?
Short answer
Usually, if you carry comprehensive. Comprehensive is the part of a car policy that pays for damage not caused by a collision, like a windshield cracked by a flying rock, a sign or branch blown into the car, or theft, minus your deductible.
Antelope Valley wind is no small thing. In December 2015, gusts blew over at least six big rigs on SR-14, and the CHP closed the highway between Lancaster and Mojave.
Temperature swings add to it. Palmdale's normal July high is about 98 degrees and its normal December low is just under freezing (NOAA), and a small chip in the glass can spread into a crack when a cold morning turns into a hot afternoon.
- Comprehensive: glass, wind-blown debris, fire, theft and vandalism.
- Collision: damage to your own car from a crash, including one in blowing dust when you can't see the road.
- Liability: damage and injuries you cause to someone else. It does not fix your car.
Check your glass deductible
Some carriers let you choose a separate, lower deductible for glass. Out here, ask what a windshield replacement would cost you out of pocket before you need one.

Is car insurance in Lancaster priced differently than in Palmdale?
Short answer
It can be. Insurers may rate on where a car is garaged, so two ZIP codes can price differently, but that optional factor has to carry less weight than your record, mileage and experience.
In practice, the bigger difference is the drive. Central Lancaster is about nine miles farther up the 14, so the same job in Santa Clarita or the San Fernando Valley means more miles on a Lancaster car every year.
We quote both cities the same way: real mileage, every licensed driver in the household and the limits you actually want. For homes, rentals and business policies in both cities, see our Antelope Valley insurance page. We also write car insurance in Santa Clarita, auto insurance in Bakersfield and car insurance in Ventura from the same office.
How do you get a quote without driving to Valencia?
Short answer
By phone, email or the online form. Most car quotes need only your driver's license numbers, your vehicles and a copy of your current declarations page.

How much is car insurance in Palmdale?
It depends more on you than on the city. Your driving record, annual mileage and years of experience carry the most weight by law, followed by things like the car, the coverage you pick and where it's garaged. We don't publish average prices because they say little about your own quote. Our guide to how much car insurance costs in California explains what moves the number.
Does commuting to Plant 42 or Edwards Air Force Base count as business use?
Usually not. Driving to and from the same workplace every day is normally rated as commuting. Business use generally means driving as part of the job itself, like visiting clients, hauling equipment or moving between job sites. Tell us exactly how you use the car, because type of use is one of the factors California insurers are allowed to rate on.
Will my rate drop if I take Metrolink instead of driving the 14?
It can. Annual mileage is the second most heavily weighted factor in a California auto rate, so a big drop in miles can lower your premium. Give us a realistic new estimate, and expect that the carrier may ask for odometer readings to confirm it. If you still drive to the station in Lancaster or Palmdale every day, count those miles too.
What happens if the wind blows something into my parked car?
If you carry comprehensive, it's usually a covered claim, minus your deductible. Comprehensive handles damage that isn't a collision, including objects blown into the car, falling branches and broken glass. Without it, you'd pay for the repair yourself, because liability only pays for damage you cause to others. If your car is financed or leased, the lender usually requires comprehensive already.
Can you file an SR-22 for an Antelope Valley driver?
Yes. When the DMV requires an SR-22, we can quote carriers that file it, including Bristol West. The insurer sends the certificate to the California DMV, and you usually have to keep it in place for three years. If the policy lapses during that time, the insurer has to tell the DMV, so set up automatic payments if you can.
Is the state minimum enough if I drive the 14 every day?
For most households, no. California's 30/60/15 minimum means $30,000 for one person's injuries, $60,000 for all injuries in one accident and $15,000 for property damage. Hospital bills from a serious freeway crash, or the cost of a newer car, can pass those limits quickly, and you could owe the difference. The DMV's insurance requirements page (opens in a new tab) lists the minimums.
