More about Santa ClaritaAt a glance
- California's minimum liability limits are 30/60/15 ($30,000 / $60,000 / $15,000) on policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025.
- Your safety record, annual mileage and years of driving experience carry the most weight in a California auto rate, so a daily I-5 or 14 commute counts.
- Carriers we can quote include Mercury Insurance, Travelers and Bristol West. Bristol West is often the fit after tickets, an accident or an SR-22 requirement.
- Metro expects the I-5 widening from the 14 to Castaic to finish in spring 2027.

What makes driving in Santa Clarita different for car insurance?
Short answer
Mostly miles and freeway time. Annual mileage is one of the three factors that move California auto rates most, and downtown Los Angeles is about 30 miles south of the city.
Every freeway trip south funnels through the Newhall Pass, where I-5 and the 14 meet and big rigs get their own truck lanes. In fast, mixed traffic like that, your liability limits (the part that pays for injuries and damage you cause) and uninsured motorist coverage matter most.
- I-5 through Valencia, Stevenson Ranch and Castaic: the main road south, past the Magic Mountain Parkway exit for Six Flags Magic Mountain.
- The 14 through Canyon Country: the Antelope Valley Freeway north to Palmdale and Lancaster, with the older Sierra Highway running alongside.
- Highway 126: west along the Santa Clara River to Fillmore, Santa Paula and Ventura.
- Local streets: McBean Parkway, Bouquet Canyon Road, Soledad Canyon Road and Newhall Ranch Road, where the school drop-offs and errands happen.

How much is auto insurance in Santa Clarita?
Short answer
There's no honest single number. Two neighbors on the same Saugus street can pay very different amounts because of their records, mileage, years licensed, cars and coverage, so the only real answer is a side-by-side quote.
Under Proposition 103, your driving record, yearly miles and years of experience carry the most weight, though insurers can use other approved factors and your limits and deductibles matter too.
One rule worth knowing: a driver who qualifies for California's Good Driver Discount (generally, licensed three years or more with no more than one point) must get a rate at least 20% below that company's rate for a driver who doesn't. The Department of Insurance auto guide (opens in a new tab) has the full conditions, and our guide to car insurance costs in California has the statewide picture.

How much coverage does a household with a home and two cars need?
Short answer
Usually more than the state minimum. One serious crash can blow through 30/60/15 limits, and you can be held personally responsible for costs above what your policy pays.
The parts of a car policy, in plain English
Liability
- What it pays for
- Injuries and damage you cause to other people
- Worth a closer look if
- You own a home or have savings to protect
Uninsured / underinsured motorist
- What it pays for
- Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little
- Worth a closer look if
- Always. Turning it down takes a signed waiver
Collision
- What it pays for
- Repairs to your car after a crash, minus your deductible
- Worth a closer look if
- Your car is financed, leased or worth fixing
Comprehensive
- What it pays for
- Theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects and broken glass
- Worth a closer look if
- Your car would be hard to replace out of pocket
Rental and towing
- What it pays for
- A rental while your car is repaired after a covered claim, plus a tow
- Worth a closer look if
- Each commuter needs a car every weekday
| Coverage | What it pays for | Worth a closer look if |
|---|---|---|
| Liability | Injuries and damage you cause to other people | You own a home or have savings to protect |
| Uninsured / underinsured motorist | Your injuries when the at-fault driver has no insurance or too little | Always. Turning it down takes a signed waiver |
| Collision | Repairs to your car after a crash, minus your deductible | Your car is financed, leased or worth fixing |
| Comprehensive | Theft, vandalism, fire, falling objects and broken glass | Your car would be hard to replace out of pocket |
| Rental and towing | A rental while your car is repaired after a covered claim, plus a tow | Each commuter needs a car every weekday |
Homeowners have the most at stake in liability, so we'll price a few levels above the minimum, and you can ask us whether an umbrella policy makes sense. Our guide to California's 30/60/15 minimum explains each number.
Which companies can we quote for Santa Clarita drivers?
Short answer
Car insurance companies we can quote include Mercury Insurance, Travelers and Bristol West. Which one fits depends on your record, your cars and each company's underwriting, which we can't control but can explain.
Some of the car insurance carriers we work with
Mercury Insurance
- Often a fit for
- California drivers with clean records, especially households that also want to insure a home
Travelers
- Often a fit for
- Drivers who want a second national option to compare, with or without a home policy
Bristol West
- Often a fit for
- Drivers with tickets, an accident or an SR-22 requirement
| Carrier | Often a fit for |
|---|---|
| Mercury Insurance | California drivers with clean records, especially households that also want to insure a home |
| Travelers | Drivers who want a second national option to compare, with or without a home policy |
| Bristol West | Drivers with tickets, an accident or an SR-22 requirement |
We aren't tied to one company. For clean-record drivers we usually start with Mercury, a California-based carrier; see our Mercury Insurance agent page. If the DMV wants an SR-22, start with SR-22 insurance in Santa Clarita. Statewide basics are on our California car insurance page.
Valley details that change a car quote
The I-5 work zone, through spring 2027
Metro and Caltrans are adding a carpool lane in each direction on I-5 from the 14 to just south of Parker Road in Castaic, plus truck lanes between the 14 and Calgrove Boulevard. Metro's project page (opens in a new tab) lists spring 2027 as the estimated finish. A work-zone commute is a good reason to check your collision deductible and rental coverage now, not after a fender bender.
Metrolink commuters
The city has four Antelope Valley Line stations: Newhall, Santa Clarita, Via Princessa and Vista Canyon, which opened in October 2023. If you ride to Union Station instead of driving, your yearly mileage may drop a lot, and your quote should show it.
Students at College of the Canyons
A teen driver changes the math on a family policy. If yours drives to the Valencia campus on Rockwell Canyon Road or the Canyon Country campus on Sierra Highway, we'll compare which car they're listed on and ask each carrier about good-student credits.
Working in Ventura County or the Antelope Valley
A job in Santa Paula or Lancaster changes your miles, not the rules. We also insure drivers who live out there: see car insurance in Ventura, car insurance in Palmdale and, for family up I-5, car insurance in Bakersfield.

Questions we hear a lot
Car insurance in Santa Clarita: common questions
Short answers to what people ask us most. Anything else, call and ask Brian or Dolores.
Still have a question?
Talk to a licensed agent at the Valencia office.
(818) 909-7486Mon to Fri, 9 AM to 4 PM
Do I have to come to your Valencia office to buy auto insurance?
No, but you're welcome to. Quotes, applications and signatures all work by phone, email and e-signature. To look at the numbers across a desk, visit 25060 Avenue Stanford, Suite 240, weekdays from 9 AM to 4 PM, and call (818) 909-7486 first so Brian has your options ready.
Does a long commute through the Newhall Pass raise my rate?
It can. Annual mileage weighs heavily in California auto rates, and a daily round trip to Burbank or downtown Los Angeles adds up quickly. Give an honest estimate, then update it if you switch to Metrolink, change jobs or start working from home part of the week.
Our teen just got a license and drives to College of the Canyons. What changes?
Usually the premium goes up, because years of driving experience is a top rating factor and a new driver has none. Carriers generally expect every licensed driver in the household to be listed. We'll compare putting your teen on the older car, ask about good-student credits, and recheck your liability limits.
I got a ticket on the 14. Can you still find me coverage?
Probably. A single ticket rarely leaves you with no options. Bristol West writes drivers with tickets or accidents, and Mercury Insurance or Travelers may still be in the running depending on your record. If the DMV has also asked you for an SR-22, our SR-22 insurance page explains how that filing works in California.
What should I do after a crash on I-5 or the 14?
Get somewhere safe first: if the car still runs, move to the shoulder or the next exit, and call 911 if anyone is hurt. Then trade license and insurance details, take photos, report the claim to your insurer and call us. Our guide on what to do after a car accident in California has the full checklist.
Can I insure our cars together with our Saugus house?
Yes. A home and two cars is the household we're set up for. We'll price the bundle with carriers that write both, compare it with keeping the policies separate, and show you the difference in dollars. See our home and auto bundle page or start with homeowners insurance in Santa Clarita.
Does my personal car policy cover deliveries or a work truck?
Not always. Personal auto policies can exclude business use such as deliveries, and a truck owned by your business usually needs a commercial policy. Tell us how each vehicle is used and we'll match it to the right policy, including commercial auto insurance for vehicles your business owns.
Do you insure drivers outside Santa Clarita?
Yes, anywhere in California, where we're licensed. Drivers in other cities work with us by phone, email and e-signature from the same Valencia office. Our Santa Clarita insurance agency page covers everything else we write for valley households.
